Ramblin - Day 5 - A trek across the Trans Pecos - or - just another day in the pucker brush.

Yesterday we toured Big Bend NP in the afternoon and early evening. As previously reported it was a cold day to ride. This morning - Tuesday, March 5th, After a French Toast and Bacon breakfast at the Bad Rabbit Cafe, we departed Terlingua Ranch Lodge at 0930. The bikes thermometer read 29.5F but thankfully it didn't feel as cold as Monday. I guess it was due to the dry rather than the grey fog we had on Monday. It warmed to 34F when we arrived at Alpine and the temperature hovered at the high 30's low 40's most of the morning. We didn't see high 40's until we reached Sanderson TX, where we took a short break and had a cup of coffee served by two surly Barristas. As I explained to the surlier of the two, "When I pay $4.75 for an Espresso I want it the way I want it, not the way you think you should make it". Brian Maddy, it wasn't as good as one of Mary's by a long shot and cold too boot! After our short break, it was hammer down US-90 to Del Rio Then US-277 to Eagle Pass and on to Laredo where this is being posted. Temp in Loredo was 54F while I was unloading, the warmest all day. Bikes have run well with the sole exception of my Auxillary Power system taking a $#{!. Testing complete and an email to Hex EZCan has been sent - awaiting their response. Will try to do better with the pictures but today was principally a moving day, The trek across the "Trans-Pecos" was a day in the pucker brush, towards the end of the day between Eagle Pass and Loredo it was all oil field and lots of traffic. More toworrow after Brownsville, S. Padre and the trek up the Gulf Coast to a friend of Kip's near Houston. Looks like it should be a bit warmer and hopefully not wet.

The Plan: Trailer "Freya" my 2014 BMW R1200 GS Adv South out of snow country, pick up a friend in Alamosa CO and head into New Mexico. Kip my riding partner for this trip is the famous Buell Man from my Inuvik and Cabo San Lucas trips. Great rider and companion, he will be on a new to him Tiger 800 XCA. We'll drop the truck and trailer at a friends, in Alamogordo NM and head South and East, hit Big bend NP, head down to Brownsville, then up the Gulf Coast towards Louisiana and a rendezvous with a couple of Cajun brethren. After the rendezvous, I'll head back West towards the truck. Haven't really thought too much about the route back other than to stay the hell off of the Slab, been there done that. Looking for "Not to be missed" roads, places, kitsch, food and to see where Trump wants to build his wall. Always game for a cup of coffee or a beer along the way. Day 6 - Vaya con dios Kip! Laredo to Aransas Pass via Brownsville and S. Padre Island

Today was a moving day, a little over 420 miles. My riding partner Kip departed this morning for Houston. I continued South then North up the Gulf Coast. I'd never been to Brownsville so I decided that Brownsville and S. Padre were part of my itinerary. Brownsville was a big border town, lots of transshipping and lots of hustle and bustle. S. Padre was a typical Beach Town on a gray somewhat wintery day. Komrade Kluck was less than impressed and said "Let's get the hell out of here" so we did. I made a great choice for lunch. I usually rely on Trip Advisor but in this case, I relied on "Cars in the Parking Lot", lunch at Alicia's Su Cocina, Penitas TX. Great Food, Great Service! Coffee, Scrambled Eggs with crumbled chorizo, a pork chop, some Mexican potatoes, Tortillas and Beans - my only meal of the day and less than $10! Day 15 -It's a wrap! And a little Recap of my 2019 March Ramble

Day 15 I woke at 0500 and after a crappy cup of Econolodge coffee, I was on the road by 0530. The McDonalds next door provided sustenance and an Americano to see me to Cheyenne via I-25. Fuel in Cheyenne and up US-85 to Torrington, Lusk, Newcastle, a jog over to Sundance WY via WY 585 and home via I-90. It was obvious that a Blizzard had been through as the snow fences in Wyoming had the most beautiful wind-sculpted drifts on their downwind side. I arrived home in Spearfish SD at 11:30 after a quick 388-mile journey. Sunrise North East of Cheyenne A little bit cooler than I'm used to after two weeks in the South! Some of thos "wind sculpted drifts" My own "Black Hills" on the horizon I always wonder why this Butte remains and the others are gone?
